Any way you look at it, buying a vehicle is a big deal. Whether it’s a car or a Sport Utility Vehicle – the first you’ve ever purchased or the latest in a long line – brand new or pre-owned – it’s one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make and your safety is at stake.
So please, make sure you protect yourself. Here are some tips on buying a vehicle and a Car Warranty* to get you started.
Tips for buying a new vehicle or new car warranty:
- Decide what’s most important to you. Is it style or size? Gas mileage or safety rating?
- Look at other vehicles in that category. Compare the benefits of different makes and models.

Tips for buying a pre-owned vehicle or used car warranty do everything above plus
:
- Inspect the vehicle for any signs of damage or mechanical issues. Vehicles that have been in accidents might have misaligned body parts or doors that don’t close properly. Strange noises, shimmies and smoke are all signs of mechanical problems.
- Look at the mileage. Has the vehicle been driven more than the average 12-15,000 miles a year? That could decrease its value and its price.

If you’re buying a pre-owned vehicle in a remote location, do everything above plus:
- Hold onto your money until you pick up the car. Don’t send money in advance. If the vehicle isn’t what you expect, you won’t have much chance of getting your money back.
- Ask for lots of photos from various angles and/or a video.
- Ask for the Vehicle Identification Number so you can order a Vehicle History Report.
- Ask the seller to have a pre-purchase inspection done.
- Get a MotorAide car warranty, or better yet, ask the seller to obtain one as part of the purchase negotiation.
If you're buying a Vehicle Service Contract for your car or SUV:
- Look at the company providing the coverage. Is it a reputable firm?
